Hand Bell Ringing

The St Michael and All Angels Ringing Team (SMAART) was formed in 2000 as a result of a talk and demonstration of hand bell ringing to the Mothers' Union by George Bailey, who was then the tower captain and choir master at St. Michael's. Several of the current team have been members from the beginning. Initially the team practised at Cledford Mission. When that was decommissioned we moved into St. Michael's. We now practise at Willowmere in Middlewich on Tuesday evenings at 7 pm.

All ages can play. Although some musical knowledge is helpful it is not necessary. An ability to count to three, four or six, and occasionally the heady heights of nine, is required! Since we only play two bells at a time it is an excellent means of developing coordination and awareness. It is very much a team activity. We use both hand bells and hand chimes – a cheaper, lighter instrument requiring a slightly different technique.

Our repertoire is slowly increasing in range. It includes hymns, carols, folk and popular songs and classics. Over the past year we have played for the residents of Willowmere, various WIs and assorted other groups and even given a bit of tuition. Scary! Anyone is welcome to come and have a go.  If you are interested please contact Susan Hawkes on 01606 832148. More information can be found on our web-site: www.middlewichhandbells.co.uk.
